Abdullah, on a quest for happiness and the truth about himself, undergoes the kind of change that takes place inwardly. He is, at the outset, a shrewd and persuasive merchant of extravagant politeness. Despite his modest inheritance, he has built a successful carpet business by attracting wealthy customers on their way to better booths. Abdullah is resilient, very cautious, and capable of helping out a friend. He cannot realize his true potential at his booth, since a merchant has little chance to develop bravery.
