Carried Away
A typical story structure usually adheres to one character perspective throughout, and while Louisa’s perspective is the most central perspective in Carried Away,” there are several distinct character perspectives that add specific textures and thematic developments to the narrative. The first instance of a perspective shift in the story is quite brief. When Louisa is speaking to Jim in the hotel dining room, much of the scene is conveyed through Jim’s perspective and his thoughts about Louisa. This perspective helps to inform external opinions of the protagonist Louisa and the personal changes and experiences she has undergone. The other perspective shift is far more sustained. After Jack’s death the perspective shifts to Arthur Doud, who feels that he is struggling to live up to his father’s legacy. Arthur soon finds himself falling in love with Louisa. Arthur’s perspective helps develop Arthur as a character, which is integral to the story because Louisa and Arthur get married.
