What does marriage to Arthur represent?

Lousia’s marriage to Arthur symbolizes the illusion of predictability. After Arthur’s death, Louisa states that she originally viewed the prospect of marrying Arthur as a means of finding her way into a normal life. However, she eventually came to realize that there is no such thing as a normal life, due to the myriad of variable aspects of every human life.
