Importance of Library

The library symbolizes the desire for stability. Louisa originally arrives in Carstairs as a traveling saleswoman, but she applies for the librarian position out of a desire for more stability and predictability in her life. This desire for stability, though natural, runs counter to the many aspects of the narrative, and of Louisa’s life, that emphasize the unpredictable.
