When we first meet Father Arsenios, he seems nothing more than a comic figure of gluttony and drunkenness. The war, however, transforms him into a wandering preacher and religious zealot. The Father is killed by a German officer after he attacks some soldiers with his stick. He attacks them because they are burning piles of Greek bodies.
