What is the setting of Cane River by Lalita Tademy?

The story is set in an area of New Orleans known as Cane River because of the proximity of the Cane River, a subsidiary of the Red River. The area is real and the history of the region has been preserved through several historical organizations. The region is known for its agricultural base. The agriculture, houses and land related in the story is typical of what actually exists, making the story more believable.
