The city of Rome is symbolic of the way meeting Oliver has widened Elio’s horizons. Throughout the novel, Elio’s parents have chastised him for not getting out more and for spending too much time alone. As a consequence of his relationship with Oliver, Elio goes to Rome, experiences new things, and meets new people.
