Monet’s Berm – the location where Elio and Oliver first kiss – is symbolic of a new kind of intimacy established between the two men as a consequence of finally revealing their feelings to each other. Before and after the kiss, the time between the two men is characterized by long periods of silence, but when they cycle past Monet’s Berm they know that both of them are thinking about the kiss. Whereas previously the silence between them was confusing, it has become a source of intimacy and certainty.
