There is an unnamed, third-person omniscient speaker in the poem who is largely absent as a character. The speaker's role is simply to convey the two contrasting images between the free bird and the caged bird. By removing agency from the speaker, Angelou is able to focus the poem on the broader implications associated with her images of freedom and captivity, allowing readers to think about themes on a larger scale rather than getting caught up in the experience of one individual.
