Phephelaphi’s mother’s name, "Getrude," symbolizes her mother’s rebellious nature. Though “Getrude” is of course a misspelling of “Gertrude,” it is also a coy symbol to the reader that Phephelaphi’s mother knows how to “get rude” and defend herself.
