In Chapter 1, how does the doctor describe what is happening to the narrator's mother's brain and memory?

The doctor first draws a diagram and "highlights areas where synaptic function is declining" (6). He then explains that the hippocampus, the areas of the brain which stores memory is basically being emptied. Her mother is no longer able to form long-term memories and her short term memory disappears.
