Importance of Magdalene

Though Magdalene, one of Sarah and Ya Ta’s close friends, also makes a brief appearance in the novel as a character, she principally serves as a symbol of an alternative path. Rather than accepting their fate, Ya Ta and Sarah believe, they would have been better off making the same choice that Magdalene did: she preferred to die rather than live as a wife of a Boko Haram member.
