Aisha’s DVD player and television are symbols of how young women in Ya Ta’s largely traditional and conservative community turn to various cultural forms as a means of escape. Through television and movies, Ya Ta and her friends are able to escape their ordinary lives and to imagine far more exciting alternatives. Aisha’s DVD player and television also serves as a window into some of the patriarchy and misogyny that dominates “Nollywood” (Nigeria’s Hollywood).
