The robber’s eyes symbolize unexpected intimacy. At one moment in the story, Anders’ and one of the robbers look into each other’s eyes. This moment is the only time that Anders seems to actually feel a sense of unease. Thus, the narrative articulates the idea that Anders has a fear of intimacy, which may contribute to his overall curmudgeonly nature.
