What are two facts about Lily, a character in the novel Bull Run?

Lily Malloy lives in a sod house in Minnesota. Her life is a grim one; her severely abusive father regularly whips all of his children, not only for transgressions he has caught, but for any that he does not know about. Lightening her otherwise miserable life is her brother Patrick, who at seventeen is five years older than Lily; they were "dear to each other." He runs off to volunteer for ninety days' service in the Union Army, and Lily anxiously follows events through his letters and hearsay. A week after the battle at Bull Run, she and her family learn of it.
