Why does Dickens give such a detailed description of the Cratchits’ meager meal?

The meal isn't really enough to feed the whole family yet the family is so grateful for what they have. Their excitement in anticipation of it makes their meagre meal feel like a feast. This is what the Christmas spirit can do.
