Why does Dickens give so much attention to the confusion about TIME at the beginning of Stave II?

From A Christmas Carol (Book)
Scrooge awakes at midnight, which leaves him baffled--it was well after two a.m. when he went to bed. Initially, he thinks he has slept through an entire day or that it's actually noon and the sun has merely gone under some sort of cover. I think that Dickens is juxtaposing the spirit world with the mortal world. Scrooge is entering the spirit world that reflects a different tone, mood, and atmosphere than what Scrooge is used to.
