We are often to identify with the main character of a novel. Does Wells invite us to identify Griffen?

The answer is no, Wells does not invite the reader to sympathise with Griffin other than he might be a representation of any man who acquired a power like this and became obsessed with darker desires it could unlock. Griffin himself is a self-absorbed and petty kind of person.
