A character or dramatic foil is a character who contrasts with another character; typically, a character who contrasts with the protagonist, in order to better highlight or differentiate certain qualities of the protagonist. Scrooge and his nephew bring out the traits in each other. Fred is cheerful and full of Christmas Spirit while Uncle Scrooge is stingy and hates Christmas.
