How and why does Washington Lee fail in his job as an editor in the novel, Brightness Falls?

Washington Lee, a black editor at Russell's firm, is in a position to support and assist black writers in publishing their work. Sadly, he squanders his talents, parties too much, and refuses to admit that he has any responsibility to help black writers publish their work.
