Evening and evening light represent timelessness. More than once, Natsuko observes feeling a sense of timelessness during the evening when observing the light in the sky. One of these instances is when she is simply reflecting on her life in her Tokyo apartment: “How many more times in my life would I sit back like this and find myself transfixed by the blue of the evening? Is this what it means to live and die alone? That you’ll always be in the same place, no matter where you are?” (165). In this passage, she is fixated on the idea of being alone for the rest of her life and not having a child or a family of her own. It is the similarity between the evenings she spends that seems to make them run together, while she imagines the company of other people might disrupt this experience.
