The novel consists of two books, with the division between books representing a divide of eight years and a shift in narrative focus. In Book One, which spans Chapters 1-7, the year is approximately 2008 and the narration switches between the first-person accounts of Natsuko and journal entries written by her niece Midoriko. In Book Two, which covers Chapters 8-17, the story picks up eight years later and is narrated purely from Natsuko’s perspective.
