The motif of motherhood (however twisted) is recurrent throughout Breakfast on Pluto. Patrick is constantly searching for his mother throughout the novel. He finds her in two ways: first, by becoming her; and second, by replacing her. According to Terence, Patrick becomes a transsexual because he 'always wanted to be' his mother. Patrick compensates for her absence by creating an image of her within himself. Later in the novel, Patrick attempts to act as a mother figure for Martina. However, Patrick does not understand the motherly role, and plays it completely wrong.
