Nicholas Hall has problems that parallel those of many protagonists of many other coming-of-age stories: illusions are shattered, uncomfortable truths are discovered, and a new, more mature sense of self emerges as a result. By the story’s conclusion, Nicholas is still young, but he is a little closer to becoming an adult – he now understands his possibilities and his limitations. Again, as is the case with the protagonists of virtually any and every coming of age story.
