How is soccer important in the story?

Soccer is important to the story because it is the one facet in Nick's life, through which, he learns to express himself. Soccer becomes a part of Nick's identity, and over the course of the novel, Nick is challenged to assert his identity in other ways.... does soccer define him, or is soccer merely a part of him?
