Why doesn't Claude understand why Mr. and Mrs. Powers treat him the way they do?

Claude doesn't understand why Mr. and Mrs. Powers barely acknowledge his presence because he is immature and socially naive. Claude is very accepting of all people and doesn't understand the Powers' attitude.
