Madeleine is an ancient midnighter. She is a mindcaster like Melissa. She had gone into hiding in a cave-like home covered in tridecograms when the Grayfoots began hunting midnighters. She reappears after 50 years when Dess uses her polymath skills to locate her and Melissa steals the information from Dess' mind.
