What metaphors are used in Bloodchild by Octavia E. Butler?

The novel, Bloodline, is seen by some as may a metaphor for the conflicted relationships between ethnic and racial groups, living in the same society. These groups share many common interests, and yet, they aslo see each other as irreconcilably different.
