If you live in Jamestown, you need to work hard. In Chapter 10, we learn that the crops are not growing well due to lack of rain, and they are being watered by too-salty water. If you cannot depend upon crops, you need to look outside for other food sources.

In Chapter 11, we learn that attacks on the fort often occur, making it necessary for the fort to be guarded twenty-four hours a day.

Unknown illnesses spread through the settlement and many die as a result. Sickly settlers cannot contribute to the establishment of the colony. Other need to pick up the slack.
