In Chapter One, the reader is put on notice that the current body is only the latest in a string of grisly murders. However, it's the unease created by Jane's dream that initiates the true tension that will permeate the novel. The foreshadowing of a young woman's life being cut short parallels the journey that Jane will begin once she learns that she is being pursued by a serial killer.
