In Bless Me, Ultima, why was it wrong to kill Lupito?

Some of the men argue that killing Lupito is wrong because he is still a human being, who has been gravely deranged by the war. He isn't responsible for the problems he's been causing due to war sickness. Narcisco tries to speak to Lupito to calm him down and ask him to turn himself in, but it does not work.
