Julia Durnford is Claudia's neighbor. She was born and raised in the countryside village in which they all live and the novel takes place. Julia comes from a prominent family, so she is very involved in civic duties of the community. When Julia first learns of Claudia moving next store, she plans to introduce Claudia to society.
Julia has two children and is married to Peter Durnford. One of Julia's favorite pastimes is gardening, so she has a garden in her yard that she takes pride in tending. In order to introduce Claudia to one of the single men in the countryside, Julia plans a dinner party to which she invites Claudia.
When Julia first finds out that Claudia's husband is in prison, Julia pulls back from their friendship. Eventually though, Julia sees Claudia for the person she is rather than to whom she is married, so they rekindle their friendship.
