The novel is divided into 25 chapters and is structured mostly in a linear format. The story begins with Tracker’s first steps towards adulthood, as he leaves the home in Juba where he grew up and goes to his ancestral home of Ku to perform the rites of manhood. Those opening chapters help to establish Tracker’s personality and background, and then the story shifts ahead 5 years, when the main narrative takes place. The main story follows Tracker and his new companions as they search for the mysterious missing boy. The progression of the plot is based not only around Tracker’s geographical movements, but also the challenges he faces and the information he acquires/uncovers.
