Who is Standing Bear from Black Elk Speaks?

Standing Bear was the leader and chief of the Ponca tribe. He successfully challenged the United States government in 1879 in the U.S. District Court in Omaha, Nebraska. His case was based on defining Native American as "persons within the meaning of the law", which also extended the rights of habeas corpus to the Indian Nation.
