The early years Black Beauty spent with his mother attributed to his calm and gentle demeanor. She taught him to be gentle and good in all things, work with a good spirit, and do not ever kick or bite.

When Black Beauty witnesses his first hunt he learns to fear the outcome. He also learns that the horses life can be thoughtlessly sacrificed for a prize.... a great price to pay.

During the period in which he was trained, he witnesses for the first time a train, and though initially frightened by it, he soon becomes quite used to the noisy, flashing contraption. This proved to be of huge benefit to Black Beauty, as he was more used to railway stations and other features of city life than other horses.

The burning of the barn teaches Beauty about the neglect of men and its consequences.
