Why did Victor join the clergy in the novel, Bitter Orange?

Victor admits to Frances that he joined the clergy as a penance, but does not believe he is doing the good he believed he could do. He studied medicine, but realized he was not cut out for that job when he could not bring himself to provide medical assistance to people injured by a bomb. Because he believed his actions allowed people to die that day, he joined the clergy.
