In Part 1, Chapter 4, the author once again offers a glimpse of the family and the troubles between them. Mikey is distant and separates himself by choosing not to go to the hospital. Silas knows that he will be blamed for not making Mikey come along even though Mikey is saying that he is sick. Silas later collapses in the hospital, foreshadowing a revelation about the extended family that will take place later in the book.
