Who is The Master

The Master is a large, jelly-like alien that controls others with his mind, forcing them to choose to work for him. Anyone who argues with the work or the demands is set upon by the Birds of Madness that apparently do the Master's bidding. The Master rules by fear but also depends on a group mentality to control the people. Laureline, Valerian, Sul, and the group of aliens only manage to defeat the Master when they band together. As the novel comes to a close, the Master is attached to the top of Valerian's spaceship, apparently looking for a new place to call home.
