The novel is written in English, but has been translated from the original French, and some of the words reflect the traditional English spellings rather than the American English spellings. For example, Laureline and Valerian arrive at the “centre of the city” (16). There are only a few examples of this kind of spelling, and most readers will understand the meanings, sometimes without even noticing the alternative spelling.
