Who is Sergeant Merwin J. Toomey in Biloxi Blues by Neil Simon?

Sergeant Toomey is the commanding officer of the new recruits in Biloxi. He is a well respected, tough, and highly decorated for his service to his country. In Act II, we learn that Toomey is being discharged because of an old head wound suffered while Toomey was in service in North Africa.
