Like her feathered namesake, Crow is an intelligent and inquisitive. As a species of bird, crows represent the traits that make Crow, the main character in the novel, a very special girl. Not only does Crow think that she looks something like a crow with her skinny legs, beakish nose and black hair and skin, but she relates to the birds as appearing to not really belong to the islands. Unlike the fish hawks and gulls that swoop and dive into the surf, the crows are different having drifted in from the mainland (8). Crow knows that she too came from somewhere else even though she does not know where. Crows are also considered to be intelligent birds and good at problem solving. It is said that they are able to recognize and remember particular humans that are mean to them and will even teach other crows to avoid that person. Similarly, Crow is very adept at problem solving and taking the necessary steps to learn about her past. She is inquisitive and investigates the mysterious sounds she heard at the hospital on Penikese Island and presses Osh to make a return trip to discover the source of the sound, resulting in Mr. Sloan's rescue. She also is able to work out the details of the letter and puzzle that her mother left for her in their home. Connecting the invisible lines between the feather and the lambs, Crow realizes that the baby's grave on Penikese Island was a decoy to protect her and that the grave is where her mother buried the treasure for safekeeping.
