Who is John Dudley in Beware, Princess Elizabeth by Carolyn Meyer?

John Dudley becomes the lord protector after Edward Seymour's death. Unfortunately, lust for power gets the best of him, and when he sees that the young king (Edward) will not live long, he begins a personal bid to place his own son on the throne. In the process, he draws up a document, which removes Henry VIII's daughters from the succession and appoints Lady Jane Grey in their place. John Dudley is late executed for treason.
