Who is Michael?

Liz has held onto Michael as a symbol of the perfect love interest like Liz has seen in her mother's favorite movies. She comes to realize that she loved the idea of Michael but does not care so much about the reality. Throughout the novel, Liz compares him to other leading men in stories and movies and realizes that many of them are not as perfect as they might initially seem.
