The prom dress is typically a symbol of one of the milestones of the senior year. For Liz, the prom dress is a symbol of one of the many events she is not sharing with her mother. Liz finds the perfect dress, but she is then hurt by her mother's absence and becomes selfish and rude in the midst of her grief.
