The novel opens with a Prologue, ends with an Epilogue, and is divided into 18 chapters that are identified by number only. The Prologue introduces Liz as a young child, who is the narrator, and describes how she became so invested in romantic comedy movies. The Epilogue is set in the fall after the other events of the story. In this scene, Liz and Wes have graduated high school and are setting out for college in California. The chapters vary greatly in length. For example, Chapter 6 is 57 pages, but Chapter 14 is only eight pages. The basic storyline flows in chronological order. Information that is part of the frame story outlining how the characters came to this point and the backstories of the individual characters appear throughout the novel. Typically, these are presented as Liz's memories of the past.
