Deborah Read Franklin from Benjamin Franklin: An American Life was the common law wife of Ben Franklin. They had to enter into a common law situation because she was technically still married to John Rogers, who had gone missing many years before when he sailed to the West Indies. Theirs is not reportedly a passionate union but they did mutually respect one another and fulfilled their familial roles. She was okay raising Ben's illegitimate son, and bore two other children to Benjamen. She was not adventurous, nor did she incline toward any of the travels that he took. She kept the home fires burning and did not leave the area.
