Sethe's mother

Ma'am is Sethe's unnamed mother who was taken from Africa. She works hard labor non-stop which prevents spending time with her daughter: she is killed when Sethe is just a girl. Nan The one-armed plantation wet-nurse who crossed the ocean in the same ship that carried Sethe's mother.
