Does Jedediah succeed in avenging his family in the novel, Bellefleur?

Jedediah's twenty years living as a hermit have only succeeded in purging him of his belief in God, and leaving him without a moral imperative to carry out the tasks of love (marriage to Germaine) and death (vengeance on the murderers of his kin). Hence, he is incapable of avenging his family.
