Who is Ishmael from Bel Canto: A Novel and what is their importance?

Though still no more than a boy, Ishmael is a member of the group of terrorists that tale over Ruben's home. In the end, Ruben plans to adopt Ishmael and raise him alongside his own son. Unfortunately, Ruben is killed during the attack by the miltary army.
