The major conflict in the novel is centered around Opal's journey to struggle against her loneliness, as well as to overcome her distance from her father, and her sadness about the way her mother abandoned them. With Winn-Dixie's help, Opal learns to deal with the obstacles and create a fulfilling life for herself in her new community.
